About this project

The youth that SportCares work with come from underprivileged and at-risk backgrounds. They are fluent in street lingo but they are not fluent in English and, in many instances, their mother tongue. These youth lack social confidence and are struggling academically – but are doing well in sport.

This programme is about making learning accessible to underprivileged youth, by leveraging on the youths’ interest in sport. Through this programme, Team Five Minutes seeks to inspire a greater desire for learning as well as encourage growth in character, confidence and communication abilities for these youth.

*SportCares functions as a subsidiary of SportSG, which aims to use sport as a force for social good.

What exactly is 'PlayBook'?

PlayBook is a 40-week sport-based curriculum, developed by Team Five Minutes alongside SportCares and Youth Corps Singapore, which seeks to improve the language skills and comprehension abilities of youth when conversing in English. Through the use of sport-based content and activities, Team Five Minutes seeks to make learning more accessible to these youth.

What exactly does a project facilitator have to do?

1. Take time to get to know the youth. Listen to them, hear their stories, and share yours too! As the saying goes, ‘They won’t care how much you know till they know how much you care’. Relationship is key! :-)

2. Inspire learning. This is not limited to just teaching, but also includes knowing the youths’ barriers to learning, encouraging them, and many times, explaining to them how their lessons may be applicable in their daily lives.

3. Encourage. These youth could have taken a beating to their confidence due to various reasons along the way in life that may have caused them to lose hope in education or in their ability to do well. That's where you, as a volunteer, can make a difference!

4. Learn! Embark on this project with an open mind, and you will be surprised at how much the youth can teach you as well :-)

Wait... What exactly do I teach?

The programme will be based on the Playbook curriculum. Team Five Minutes will be giving you a copy of the training manual to aid you and your fellow volunteers in conducting the lessons. Team Five Minutes will also be providing training to familiarise volunteers with the curriculum and equip volunteers with necessary skills before embarking on the 40 week journey. Team Five Minutes will also be facilitating bonding sessions between the youth and volunteers at the beginning of the programme.

What is the commitment like if I take this up?
