Team ELF: Project ELF (ELderly Fitness Programme)

Project ELF (ELderly Fitness Programme) aims to create community of self-enabled and empowered elderly living in Blk 422-430 Cheng San-Seletar area who are able to practice active aging and healthy living habits. We intend to achieve this by designing and conducting a regular exercise programme which empowers and encourages the elderly to maintain their health through exercise.

The project consists of two phases. The first phase will focus on raising awareness and outreach. The second phase will be the implementation process.

Phase 1: We will conduct door-to-door knocking to reach out to the elderly living in the targeted neighbourhood and understand their thoughts and feelings about exercise. We will also share with them the importance of exercising in maintaining their health and functional mobility and recommend simple exercise regimes to them.

Phase 2: We will conduct exercise programmes every Saturdayfrom April 2017 onwards. By participating in the programme, the elderly will learn exercise routines which they can carry out on their own when they are at home.

The exercises will focus on flexibility and strength training. The exercises crafted for the programme would be simple and convenient for the elderly to practise at their own time. These exercises are particularly important as it prevents falls and age-associated sarcopenia (or known as the loss of muscle mass)

In addition to the exercise programme, our team will be educating the elderly on the importance of proper nutrition which involves encouraging the consumption of certain food items which are important but often found lacking in the diet of elders.

This project is part of Youth Corps Singapore’s Leaders Programme.
