Lakeside Family Services

Our Projects

Project Elephant

Project Elephant was implemented with segments 'Enrich', 'Experience', and 'Exchange' to encourage and strengthen parent-child relationships among at-risk youth. Activities such as workshops and baking session were carried out for the families to have more opportunity to interact with one another. The objectives of this project were for the beneficiaries to have a better understanding of each other between themselves and the families to create a sustainable platform in reaching out to them.

This project is part of Youth Corps Singapore’s Leaders Programme.

Opportunities

No current opportunity for this project.

Project Ohana

The project aims to enhance Lakeside Family Services' existing programmes by providing a platform for sustained interaction, in the form of regular monthly activities comprising outings and gatherings. Through needs analysis, S.I.A. team understands that the beneficiaries lack the opportunity to come together. In addition, they fought social stigma alone and emotions arising from the family member's incarceration. The team hopes that through such activities, families would have an understanding of the value of family bonding and the importance of communication. The project also aims to help build a support of network of families who share similar struggles and experiences.

This project is part of Youth Corps Singapore’s Leaders Programme.

Project Ohana is back with a bang again!  In commemoration of Mothers' Day, we are organising an engagement event called "Thmumbs Up" for beneficiaries of Lakeside Family Services.  Specifically, our beneficiaries are families of the incarcerated who are currently undergoing the emotional loss of their loved ones by their sides.  We have been planning monthly engagement activities for the families since November last year, and this event will be our last engagement activity before we end our project.  We hope volunteers can come on board and join us in this meaningful day of celebrating our common love for our beloved mums!

We will first be having a series of events at Red Box in the early part of the day and there is a Toy Museum outing after that.

Details of the programme are as follows:

  • Date: 7 May 2016, from 8am to 3pm (volunteers to reach by 8am so that we can do a simple debrief on the event flow)
  • Venue: The Red Box (Youth Corps Singapore)
  • Attire: anything comfortable, but please do wear the Youth Corps t-shirt if you have it! :)

If you would like to join us for this unforgettable event, please contact Xue Qi at 96187292 (SMS/Whatsapp) or changxueqi1995@gmail.com. We hope to see you at Red Box on 7 May!

Our car wash fundraising event is back again!  We are partnering with our sister team from Singapore Association for Mental Health (SAMH) to co-organise this car wash event!  Our beneficiaries remain the same but have expanded - they are still families of the incarcerated, but now with sister team, we are also helping theirs too!  We are currently looking for more funds to cover the expenses of events organised for them, so we sincerely ask for your help to aid us in this meaningful endeavour of ensuring enough funds for our beloved beneficiaries.

There will be three shifts again for volunteers, but if you are willing to volunteer with us the whole day, we will gladly welcome you!

  • Shift 1: 1pm - 4pm
  • Shift 2: 4pm-7pm
  • Shift 3: 7pm-11pm (we will monitor the crowds after 9pm, if there are not many, we will end earlier)

Water and snacks are provided for volunteers in Shifts 1 and 2, while dinner is provided for those in Shift 3.  Shift 1 volunteers are advised to have their lunch before coming. Water will also be provided for all so you need not bring water bottles if they are too heavy (there are water coolers there).

We also sincerely ask for volunteers who have once participated in our first car wash (held 13 March) to return and serve with us again!  We promise more welfare for everyone! :D

Details of the car wash fundraising event are as belows:

  • Date: 14 May 2016 (Saturday)
  • Venue: Orto (former Bottletree Park), next to Khatib MRT - please reach 1 hour before each shift (i.e. 12pm for Shift 1, 3pm for Shift 2, 6pm for Shift 3) so that we have sufficient time to debrief you on the event flow.  We will provide you with the directions to reach Orto directly.
  • Attire: anything comfortable, preferably shorts and slippers, bring cap and sunblock lotion too if you need it - we will be providing lanyards for identification

More details of the event will be provided when we receive confirmations of your attendance.  If you would like to join us, please accept this invitation first and contact Xue Qi at 96187292 (SMS/Whatsapp) to confirm your interest for the event.

Cent$ible

The aim of this project is to educate the families from Lakeside Family Services' Families-in-Transition (FiT) shelter on the importance of savings and eventually cultivating a saving habit. To impart basic financial knowledge and skills to those families, the team developed a comprehensive Financial Literacy programme, comprising of workshops coupled with incentives to encourage savings. By imparting such knowledge and skills to the families, clients would be better able to cope with the financial difficulties they are facing, and ultimately allowing them to have the financial means to transit out of the FiT shelters smoothly.

This project is part of Youth Corps Singapore’s Leaders Programme.

With these in mind, the team hopes this could increase the number of volunteers with EA (including both long-term and ad hoc volunteers)

Camp Aspire

Due to lack of manpower and possible volunteer burnout, Agape Vision has not been able to establish a long-term support structure for youths that have participated in their programmes. Working with youth-at-risk, it is crucial that the youths have sufficient guidance, and support to push them out of the poverty cycle. Total post-programme disengagement have led to cases of youth getting involved in juvenile activities. The team has thus designed a programme which provides a platform for the formation of support groups that re-engages past participants and ensure sustainability in engagement with the current participants even after their programme ends.

Lakeside EVG - Phong Thanh Commune

The objective of Team Tock Seng's project was to provide the students in Phong Thanh A Primary School with a more holistic education - through specially designed character-building curriculum. The team hoped to develop these students into future team leaders of good character, values and virtues. The curriculum the team pursued involved the use of the P.E.T (Perseverance, Empowerment, Teamwork) framework and creative lesson delivery, via visual teaching aids, IT resources and out-of-classroom activities. Other skills such as team-building, mentoring skills and good values were imparted to the teachers as part of a train-the-trainer programme, and subsequently have them impart these values to the students. Through building character values in the children, the team hoped to lay a good foundation for a tightly-knitted community.

Team West End: Community Outreach

Project 'STARS Kids' aims to provide activities for the children in the Nanyang community. It adopts a two-pronged approach to addressing the lack of children’s programmes and the rowdiness displayed by the youths and children in the vicinity. To do so, the project assimilated the inculcation of values into both its theory and practical elements which form the primary base for the programme. Project 'STARS Kids' also serves as the allaying bridge between satisfying the children’s interests and meeting the needs and concerns of the parents in the Nanyang community.
