Our Projects

MPower

In Singapore's mainstream education system, there is a lack of available support systems for the visually impaired students to meet their academic and non-academic needs. Therefore, the need for an effective program which addresses these needs has been identified. A mentorship program has been designed which consists of six stages, during which includes activities and programs that meant to develop the students academically and in achieving role models and new friends who would be supporting them in their journey.

This project is part of Youth Corps Singapore’s Leaders Programme.

Opportunities

No current opportunity for this project.

Metamorphosis

Caterpillar Club is dedicated to enrich underprivileged children's lives through enrichment programs. The founder acknowledges the importance of developing each child non-academically such as character building with moral values and becoming socially responsible individuals who can contribute to society. However, one of the challenges faced was the low responses to the program. Through their needs analysis, UMorphosis team decided that the club needed a volunteer management system. Thus, the project team would like to propose the project "Metamorphosis" as a change to engage volunteers on a regular basis to the Caterpillar Club.

This project is part of Youth Corps Singapore’s Leaders Programme.

Opportunities

No current opportunity for this project.

Faith in Light

Project Faith in Light focused to improve the learning culture and generate awareness about recycling amongst Cambodian kindergarten students studying at Hope in Light English Language School. Team Everlast aimed to modify the infrastructure of the classroom to make it more conducive for interactive learning. In addition, the team improved the lesson plans to promote interactive learning and environmental awareness.

This project is part of Youth Corps Singapore’s Leaders Programme.

Opportunities

No current opportunity for this project.

Shine a Light

Project Shine a Light aimed to set up a volunteering platform for students from National University of Laos (sighted volunteers) as well as the Laos Association for the Blind (visually impaired volunteers). Kampong Endeavo team hoped to facilitate a pilot community project for visually impaired during their implementation trip, which would build up empathy for the sighted volunteers and serve as an opportunity for experiential learning. The desirable outcome of the project would be for the visually impaired to have a boost in confidence and a renewed sense of purpose and belonging within their community.

This project is part of Youth Corps Singapore’s Leaders Programme.

Opportunities

No current opportunity for this project.

Team Ballaos

Laos: Cohort 2 Team Kampong Endeavo kick-started a futsal clinic for the Visually Impaired (VI) students. Cohort 3 Team Ballaos scaled up the futsal clinic by sharing the rules of playing futsal, building team discipline and ownership of sports equipment, teaching futsal drills and new drills (shooting), as well as organising a futsal competition for the VI students to apply what they have learnt. Apart from that, Team Kampong Endeavo introduced tactile board games for the VI students; and Team Ballaos continued to introduce more board games for the VI students to play and improve their other senses, which would allow them to discover and be more confident of their talents.

This project is part of Youth Corps Singapore’s Leaders Programme.

Volunteer - Car Wash (12PM-4PM SHIFT 1, reporting time 11.30am)

Closing date: 08 Jul 2016

Hi there! As part of our overseas project, Team Ballaos has gone down to Laos in June to serve the Visually Impaired (VI) community. Together with our community partner, ETCH Empathy, we visited the Home of Light, a boarding school for VI children. The project objective is to enhance the VI children’s self-esteem and self-confidence by introducing to them several new activities. We ignited their passion in football through running a blind futsal clinic and also co-created with them tactile board games that they played with and learnt from.

In order for Team Ballaos to complete this project, we need to fundraise $1707. The money covers the logistics needed to run the blind futsal clinic (i.e. balls with bells installed inside the ball for them to hear, whistles and blindfolds) and to create the board games.

To raise these funds Team Ballaos will be organizing a Car Wash at ORTO Yishun on the 9th of July, 12pm to 8pm.

We need volunteers to assist us in washing these cars. There will be a total of 2 shifts. You can choose to take up either 1 shift or both the 2 shifts; 1200hrs – 1600hrs and 1600hrs – 2000hrs. There will be a 30minute briefing before the start of every shift.

HOW TO GET THERE:

5 min walk from Khatib MRT.

Human Library

Human Library is a social change movement that aims to create dialogue and understanding between people. It is a place where real people are "on loan" to readers and a safe space for conversations to occur.

The theme of the upcoming Human Library session is "Serve". We will be bringing our readers an afternoon of conversations with changemakers of different background. The books will be taking the readers on a ride with their personal stories in serving others, of the sacrifices that they have made, the energy that keeps them going and the stigma that they encounter in their service.

Through this afternoon of exchange, we hope to provide our readers with new insights and perspectives towards volunteering and serving communities, and hopefully to inspire our readers to model after the books in their spirit of giving.

Songkherm

Cambodia: Cohort 2 Team Everlast reduced the burning of rubbish by upcycling bottles. Cohort 3 Team Songkhem continued to encourage the students to practice good waste management through their lesson plans. Also, with the uplifted classroom facilities by Team Everlast, which allowed for adequate lighting and space, Team Songkhem finished the work by furnishing the classroom with tables and chairs. Apart from that, Team Songkhem refurbished a library and aimed to promote good health by introducing whiteboards and eliminating the use of chalk which produces dust.

This project is part of Youth Corps Singapore’s Leaders Programme.

Closing date: 17 Mar 2017

Hello! Project Shine A Light has commenced its second round of recruitment. Do read on to find out more, and to join us in our programmes overseas!

Project Shine A Light consists a group of youth collaborating with NPO ETCH Empathy to make a difference. It is a student-led initiative to bring together 16 highly motivated youth to step out of our comfort zones, for the opportunity to 1) make a tangible impact on a host community, and 2) accelerate personal development and growth.

Our project essentially consists a 4-prong approach with our host community, which is the Home of Light in Vientiane, Laos. The Home of Light houses and serves as a shelter, a kampong, even, for Visually Impaired (VI) children and teenagers aged 3 - 18 in Laos. However, aside from the teaching of rudimentary computer skills, and tuition for mainstream subjects, the Home does not currently have sufficient opportunities for the children to develop holistically, and thus, our aims: 1) to introduce the VI children to skills that may serve them better in the future; 2) to provide a platform for the VI children to productively utilise their time and learn, even during their holidays; 3) to aid in the restructuring of donated items, with the possibility of collaboration with other groups that volunteer with our host community.

In addition to the project plan in Laos, we also want to highlight the VI community in Singapore. Multiple events for outreach are in their various stages of planning.

We are looking for youth aged 18 - 35 to join our team to catalyse change in this small, warm community in Laos.

The details are as follows:
1) Trip date: 10 - 24 June
2) Trip cost: S$600
3) Commitment: weekly nightly meetings from March - June, along with ad-hoc events, and the main trip.

Do contact Chiew Hui at chiewhuiwang@outlook.com, or through this portal should you have any enquiries.

Please respond through this portal, and drop Chiew Hui an email at chiewhuiwang@outlook.com should you be interested in journeying with us.
