Beyond Social Services

Our Projects

Parental Empowerment

Team Apollo proposed project focus on creating opportunities for parents to enhance their programme planning skills so that they would be able to plan parent-child bonding activities for children in the community. The project was implemented base on study conducted by students from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP) which shows that children from low-income families tend to perform poorly academically. The team hopes that by increasing parent-child engagement, the children's academic performance would be impacted positively.

Team Swee: Project HOPE

Project H.O.P.E. (Helping Our Precious Environment) aims to foster a sense of neighbourhood pride in the Bukit Ho Swee community through a recycling project. We hope that through our project we will be able to build a relationship with the community as well as impart good values to the children of Bukit Ho Swee. This will be achieved through our project of recycling and upcycling.

Recycling:  We will be going door-to-door to collect recycled materials from the residents of Bukit Ho Swee to demonstrate the importance of keeping their environment clean. We will also be bringing on board the children of the community with us for this collection so that everyone will get to play a part in this project, and hope that the children will pick up habits like recycling in their daily lives. This will be done every first Saturday of the month (April/May/June).

Upcycling: We will be conducting Do-It-Yourself Art and Craft sessions with the children of the community every Saturday from April 2017 to July 2017 (excluding the first Saturday of the month). We will be making daily practical items, musical instruments and game objects with the recycled materials we have gathered from the community.

These sessions aim to bring us closer to the children and build real and trustable friendships with them. Our main focus would not be on making the items successfully but rather forming bonds and being role models to these children. The sessions are a form of platform for us to interact with the children.

At the end of the 3 months, we will be having an exhibition where we will be showcasing the products made by the children and inviting the entire community to attend. This aims to spread the word of our project and most importantly spread the impact we have made on the community.

Hence, do come on board with us to play an important role in guiding these children, bringing HOPE into their lives and making SWEE memories with one another.

BridgePlease!

BridgePlease! aims to get engage the community over at North Bridge Road to give the Good Samaritans a platform and empower them to make a change within their neighbourhood.

The team intends to galvanise and empower Good Samaritans to cultivate a “kampong spirit”, develop active citizenship and a sense of ownership over their neighbourhood, and to demonstrate proactiveness in being the eyes and ears of the community. This committee of resident volunteers may then enable the neighbourhood to fend for itself more effectively.

Through weekly discussions and reflections about their neighbourhood, the residents will then initiate a resident-led program to either capitalise upon their community’s assets or tackle a prominent and pressing challenge in the neighbourhood.

This project is part of Youth Corps Singapore’s Leaders Programme.

Project 2gether

Our team aims to gather Neighbourhood Leaders within the Henderson Heights neighbourhood. Initially facilitating meetings, we will gradually entrust these Neighbourhood Leaders to lead and organise their own sessions. These gatherings will be conducted over the next five months, structured with the following aims in mind; to create a self-sustaining committee of Neighbourhood Leaders, to bond them so that they may resolve conflicts effectively, and to empower them to take charge of events in their neighbourhood. With that, we hope to bring back, or at least reignite, the vibrant culture that was once present in Henderson Heights.

Stirring Stirling Series

Stirring Stirling Series aims to nurture a close-knitted community of empowered residents living at Stirling Road Blk 45, 48 and 49, Singapore’s oldest blocks built by HDB way back in 1960. We intend to achieve this via monthly activities such as sports activities with the children. The activities will focus more on rapport building and bonding within the children, as well as among the volunteers and children.

Through our prior engagement with the residents, we noticed that some residents were willing to contribute to the Stirling community but they lacked proper knowledge of channelling available resources to actualise their ideas. We aim to harness potential talents by organising monthly themed events that empowers the residents based on their strengths and interests.

In addition, we will be collecting stories from the residents that uncovers their strengths, interests and hobbies with the hope of disseminating such stories for the residents at the area to know more about each other and for the public to learn more about the lives of these residents living in the oldest blocks in Singapore.

This project is part of Youth Corps Singapore’s Leaders Programme.
